3 Cat training tips and tricks

Are cats as fun to train as dogs? Your cat will welcome learning and understanding directions and most cats also go on leash training if provided with fun and food! “Many cats love training if done properly, with patience and rewards,” says behaviorist Katenna Jones, ACAAB and director of Jones Animal Behavior in Rhode Island.

But there's a way to do everything, and there are also some tips and tricks to train cats. Read on...

3 TIPS AND TRICKS TO TRAIN CATS

“The important thing is to let your cat have the final say in what you teach them; not all cats like to do all things,” says Ingrid Johnson, CCBC and director of Fundamentally Feline in Georgia. “Choose behaviors that already come naturally to your cat before setting out to put the behavior on cue.

“Keep it positive,” she adds. “Clicker training is a very effective way to pinpoint the moments your cat does the behavior you focused on.”

Training, in a nutshell, is just assigning words to natural behaviors and rewarding your cat for cooperating. Here are three tips and tricks to train your cat.

1. Reward Your Cat - Train your cat to behave appropriately by using positive reinforcement, not punishment. DON’T hit the cat when it does something wrong. The cat won’t understand the reason for your behavior, and will just learn to fear you. Instead, teach your cat to listen to you by rewarding it.

Tip - Try this to train your cat.

Call your cat by its name, when it comes, reward it with its favorite treat. Do this twice or thrice a day.

Reason - If you do such then your cat will have a habit to listen to you.

2. Discouraging Aggression - Usually cats start biting and scratching while playing. If you don't take action at that time then the cat will get a habit to bite and scratch people it meets.

Tip - Try this to stop your cat from biting and scratching.

Whenever your cat does rough-playing simply make a loud startling noise (you could hiss) and then walk away. (This also means the end of playtime)

Reason - If you do such then your cat will feel guilty and avoid biting or scratching because it knows that if it does such then you wouldn't play.

3. Not Scratching Furniture - Cats love to scratch things usually to sharpen their claws. And they start scratching furniture which soon becomes a habit!

Tip - Get your cat a scratching post where the cat can scratch to sharpen its claws. Also, whenever you spot inappropriate behavior, distract your kitty with a sharp, uncommon sound. It will alert them, but it won’t create panic. Try to use the same sound every time.

Reason - This will make your cat feel open, and the distraction will make your kitty not act inappropriately.
